KRO-NCRV and production company Big Blue previously announced that they will release Grand Hotel aan Zee at the end of 2026, the first romantic period drama produced in the Netherlands. The eight-part series is set between 1912 and 1919 in a prestigious seaside hotel on the North Sea coast in Noordwijk. Today, the broadcaster reveals the first leading roles. Golden Calf winner Thekla Reuten takes on the role of hotel owner Sandra, who inherits the establishment from her late husband and is determined to turn it into a leading destination for Europe’s elite.

Joes Brauers also plays a prominent role in the new KRO-NCRV series. The actor, who recently received a Golden Calf for his role in Fuck-a-Fan and has previously appeared in Hardcore Never Dies and De droom van de jeugd, plays Ludwig, Sandra’s eldest son and the rightful heir to Grand Hotel aan Zee. Florence Vos Weeda also has a leading role in the period drama. She plays Kathelijne, a fisherman’s daughter who starts working at the hotel as a maid. She previously appeared in productions such as De slet van 6vwo and Bad Boa’s. Mustafa Duygulu, known for ArcadiaNemesis and Tonnano, portrays Dr. Kessels, the hotel’s resident doctor with whom Sandra shares a close bond. KRO-NCRV will announce the other cast members at a later date.

Dare to dream
At the heart of Grand Hotel aan Zee is Sandra (Thekla Reuten). She wants to transform her hotel within two years into the destination for Europe’s elite, but as a woman in the early twentieth century she faces numerous obstacles. The hotel’s transformation not only shapes her own future, but also that of several women around her. Together, they discover that there is gradually room to make their own choices and influence their futures.

In and around the Noordwijk hotel, the lives of staff, guests and villagers become intertwined, resulting in intrigue, blossoming romances and unexpected twists. Grand Hotel aan Zee combines beautiful costumes, impressive sets and delightful characters with timeless themes such as love, motherhood and ambition.

Established collaboration
Grand Hotel aan Zee is produced by production company Big Blue in co-production with KRO-NCRV and VRT. KRO-NCRV and Big Blue previously collaborated successfully on the drama series Rampvlucht and Ik val niet, ik dans.
